It is a native white grape variety of the Rías Baixas appellation of origin in Galicia. Its origins are not clear but there are several theories about its first appearances following the arrival of the Monks of Cluny in the twelfth century to the Monastery of Armenteira (Val Do Salnés) when they began to cultivate this variety for self-consumption. Later it spread throughout the region thanks to the cultivation of numerous families and small winemakers who began to plant their own vineyards in the form of the classic vines in the area.

The Albariño occurs in small yellow-green clusters whose maturation is somewhat early. The wines it produces have a straw yellow color generally, with floral and fruity aromas of medium-high intensity and medium-long persistence. The palate is really balanced, harmonious and fresh.

The vineyards of this variety can be found in the denomination of origin Rías Baixas, Ribera Sacra and California. In the Ribera del Rin there is a very similar variety, which at first was thought that the origins of Albariño could be placed in it, but today, this theory is totally ruled out, because genetically they do not coincide.
